Baird’s tapirs Tapirus bairdii in Nicaragua

چکیده
N has a high level of biocultural diversity that has brought many researchers to the country for centuries. There exist many reports about their studies and explorations that describe Nicaraguan cultures, languages, and ecosystems. Nonetheless, terrestrial fauna has been significantly under-represented in these investigations and subsequent publication. Due to this, there is a great deal regarding Nicaraguan fauna, especially for rare species such as the Baird’s tapir, that remains unknown to international conservationists. The IUCN range map for this species is a case in point. In this article we clarify the historical and contemporary status of the Baird’s tapir in Nicaragua through a literature review and a preliminary discussion of our long-term ecological research using camera trap and track surveys along the Caribbean Coast of Nicaragua.

A New Record of Baird’s Tapir Tapirus bairdii in Nicaragua and Potential Implications
T Baird’s tapir Tapirus bairdii, acknowledged as the largest terrestrial mammal in Central and South America, is also one of the region’s rarer mammals. The species is listed as endangered on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List, is an Appendix 1 Species on the Convention on the International Trade of Endangered Species (CITES), and less than 5,500 are estimated to...
متن کاملEcology and Conservation of Baird’s tapir in Mexico
Baird’s tapir (Tapirus bairdii) is endangered primarily because of habitat loss and fragmentation, and overhunting throughout its distribution range (ca. 21,000 km) in the Mexican states of Campeche, Chiapas, Quintana Roo, Oaxaca, Veracruz, and possibly Yucatan and Tabasco. The number of tapirs occurring in Mexico is estimated around 2,600 individuals, which are also threatened by factors such ...
متن کاملGenetic variability and population structure among wild Baird's tapirs
Baird's tapir, Tapirus bairdii, is an endangered, large, Central American mammal whose shy behaviour, solitary social structure and preference for deep tropical forests make it difficult to study using traditional field biology techniques. Despite great concern regarding its conservation status, very little is known about its population structure, mating system or dispersal patterns, informatio...

Picture frame and tapir’s nose. The tapir (Brazilian from Tupi language) is any of several large hoglike mammals of the genus Tapirus, of tropical America (South America and Central America) and the Southeast Asia Malayan peninsula. Tapirs have a long flexible snout (proboscis), and four toes to the fore feet and three to the hind ones. They feed on plants and move about night. Due to its large...
متن کاملViability of small seeds found in feces of the Central American tapir on Barro Colorado Island, Panama.
Tapirs are known as effective dispersers of large-seeded tree species, but their role in dispersing small-seeded plant species has yet to be established. Tapir feces have been reported to contain large numbers of small seeds, but whether these are viable has rarely been evaluated. We determined the abundance and viability of small seeds in feces of Central American tapir (Tapirus bairdii) on Ba...
